Directly across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower are the palais de Chaillot and the place du Trocadéro. The buildings were built in the 1930s for the Universal Exposition of 1937. The original palais du Trocadéro was destroyed during the Revolution and nothing replaced it for over 100 years. The new palace followed the same design as the old one, only without the addition of the center building and without the domes on top. Chaillot is now home to three museums (Marine, Mankind, and Monuments), a theater, and a cinema. The hip-hop show that we saw was held inside the Palais de Chaillot. The outside of the buildings is as interesting as the inside; the open square in between the two curved wings is a meeting place for many demonstrations and the fountain and garden out front is truly beautiful.
